Social media and branding for a national b-boy stage

For the 2017 KPO Breaks event in Kuopio, I led the social media strategy, visual identity, and content production to raise awareness and attendance beyond the local b-boy scene. Through careful planning, consistent design, and pre-scheduled content, the event achieved strong engagement, positive feedback, and drew a wider audience. The project reinforced my skills in strategic visual storytelling and event branding.

Beyond the local scene

KPO Breaks was an annual b-boy / b-girl dance event in Kuopio, Finland, and in 2017 it was one of the most anticipated in the country. When preparing for the 2017 edition, the main challenge was to build excitement and draw participants from beyond the local area, especially since the Finnish b-boy scene is most concentrated in Helsinki. As social media and graphics lead, I needed to make the event look compelling enough that people would travel for it, rather than seeing it as a local-only show.

Strategy, design, and steady rollout

Strategy and planning

  • Created a content calendar and social media strategy. This involved researching past KPO Breaks events (from 2000–2009), gathering archival material to use in visuals, and storytelling.

Visual identity and design

  • Created the look and feel for social media posts, poster designs, T-shirts, and more. Ensured consistency in style, tone, and aesthetics across all graphical assets.

Execution and scheduling

  • Planned every post in advance (date, text, hashtags, style), so that content release was steady, aligned with key moments, and built momentum.

Collaboration

  • While I handled most of the planning, design, and strategy, I delegated some video editing tasks to a teammate to ensure quality and timeliness.

Visibility and credibility nationwide

The strategy paid off. The event gained strong visibility on social media, creating the buzz needed to attract dancers and hip hop enthusiasts from around Finland — not just from Kuopio. The audience praised the professional look of the graphics and the consistency of the campaign, which gave the event credibility and energy before it even began. Posters, T-shirts, and other visual materials helped cement the identity of KPO Breaks, and attendees highlighted how the communication stood out compared to similar events. In the end, the project successfully raised the profile of the event and reinforced its position as a key gathering for the Finnish b-boy scene.
